Results from the South Cup

UCC Retain South Cup in trying conditions

On a blustery afternoon where good golf was hard to come by for most the UCC Staff golf society team prevailed and once again retained the South cup. The leading scorers from UCC were:

Jim Calnan (35 points)
Conor McCarthy (35 points)
Dan Walsh (35 points)
Maurice Conway (34 points)
Michael Tobin (34 points)
Ed Burke (32 points)

Muskerry had the best score of the day with Barry Duggan returning a fine 39 points, however their inability to field a full team led to UCC winning by 203 to Muskerry's 172.

The students had only one participant, the student golf club captain Brian Cahill.

The reductions applied for this outing are as follows:
Jim Calnan (-1)
Conor McCarthy (-1)
Dan Walsh (-1)
Maurice Conway (-1)

Michael Tobin (-1)
Ed Burke (-1)

A great days golf was had by all. The weather was superb, with bright sunshine throughout. Don Walsh showed fine form in capturing the opening event of the season, holding onto the early clubhouse lead on 40 points, a fine score that earns him a 2-point deduction for all further outings this year (apart from the Captain's prize). Because winter rules were in force there are no handicap adjustments to be made for this outing (for Society handicaps). The committee looks forward to seeing you all at the next outing in Muskerry.

Welcome letter from Captain Willie Weir

Friday, 24 October 2008

Dear Member,

The officers and committee have now finalised our golf society schedule for 2009.

Outlined below is our golf programme and green fee cost for 2009.

Following the adoption of a motion at our 2007 AGM to offer more golf outings on a Saturday, we are now implementing this adopted proposal and accordingly four of our outings will be held on a Saturday. We trust this will facilitate members who are unable to play on weekdays.

The cost of Saturday green fee rates are more expensive than weekdays and without wishing to impose higher green-fee charges on our members the committee have decided to subsidise green-fee rates for 2009.

We will continue to monitor green-fee costs and be assured that we will endeavour at all times to do our upmost to minimise green-fee charges to our members.

Our successful 2008 sponsorship promotion will be pursued with vigour in 2009. In this regard we encourage our members to support us in whatever way they can. Successful sponsorship outcomes will assist us in operating our golf society in a more efficient and effective manner.

In conclusion on behalf of the officers/committee and society members we take this opportunity of congratulating Maurice Conway on his election as Gents Captain of East Cork Golf Club. We also congratulate Maria Carroll on her election as Lady Captain as Glengarriff Golf Club. The very best to you both during your term of office.

Yours in sport,

Willie Weir
